How to find your niche & your target market before you start a blog

How to find your niche & your target market, before you start a blog. Lot of aspirant blogger go through this grilling stage. And this is one of the most important to be answered before you even take a step ahead.

We are about to cover two things to get you started within the next few hours.

  • Your Niche/Topic, and;
  • Your target market

In order to have your blog ready with few initial support audience, we have to do this right. So without wasting any of our time, let’s start.

What is Niche?

Niche is the specialty of your blog, around which your content will be curated. For an example, you choose health as the niche of your blog. Then all the contents of your website will be related to health only. Now you cannot take that lightly, as your viewers might get distracted and lose interest in your blog.

Why they’ll lose interest? Because it’s your niche, which made them be there with you. They want to learn more about that topic specifically from you. If you write something apart from this niche (till it’s a multi-niche blog), they might lose their focus. So it’s your niche about which you’ll be writing, podcasting or making videos on your new blog.

3 Ingredients of Good Niche:

Now coming back to your niche/topic. It must have 3 main qualities in order to earn money from your blog:

  1. You should have an interest in the topic;
  2. You should have some knowledge, exposure & experience on the topic ( and the desire to learn more and more, to develop your skills within the topic as the time flies);
  3. It should have a value in others eyes.

How to find Your Niche?

First, let’s cover the 2 ingredients connected to you, which are:

  1. You should have an interest in the topic;
  2. You should have some knowledge, exposure & experience on the topic ( and the desire to learn more and more, to develop your skills within the topic as the time flies);

Go through the below listed successful blogging topics. After that we’ll do an exercise to find out your niche, covering above two mentioned ingredients. Later, we’ll finalize your niche covering 3rd ingredient of your niche.

These are few which I can find doing my research, but that does not mean that there are none other than the above-mentioned topics.

Exercise for you:

Choose any 3 different topics of your personal interest and brainstorm yourself on these 3 aspects written below:

  1. Have paid for it recently;
  2. What can you teach people about it;
  3. Do you have to capacity to learn more it, from any source?

If the answer to all the above is yes, then choose that niche/topic as the niche for your blog.

Example:

Let’s say you choose food and beverages as your niche. Now brainstorm yourself answering all the questions mentioned above like this:

  1. I have paid for a Chinese, Italian & South India cuisine with beverages in the past 1-6 months and have paid a lot;
  2. I can teach a lot about Chinese & South India cuisine to anyone;
  3. There are a lot of resources for me to learn about many different cuisines from YouTube, blogs, books, from my family members, and from many other resources.

If I get a yes to all the above questions, then I would definitely go for it as my blog’s niche.

Why this works:

This works as it changes your perception. Once you answered all those 3 question mentioned above, you get to know these:

  • You paid for it, so there is market;
  • It’s your arena, where you feel you can teach people. So it definitely boosts your confidence;
  • There are learning materials, so you are not limited only to your knowledge. You always have the option to learn more and to expand yourself.

People listen to those who know more than them on the topic of their interest or need. Mind it, I didn’t say, experts, I said someone who knows more than them, so there even a little bit more is fine. Which means if your audience comes with zero knowledge in your niche/topic, then they’ll listen to you with very much interest, as you know further than them.

But here is something tricky, and the game changer. It’s the willingness to pay for your niche. Are you able to attract the audience, which is willing to pay for what you are willing to talk about? So to cover this, let’s dive into third ingredient of a Good Niche.

How to find Your Niche?

So here we’ll talk about your customer’s perspective and our third ingredient, which is:

  1. It should have a value in others eyes.

This third ingredient has everything to do with only your readers. It means analyzing the market in your niche, whether you have readers for you or not.

Now, most of the introvert people ask, is it important to do this? Well, it’s not mandatory, but it gives you more quick results. If you don’t want to do it, that’s all upon you. But believe me, it won’t hurt you, even if you are an introvert.

So let’s dive in.

Before you proceed, please keep a notebook and a pen handy. As things mentioned further need you to take actions right now.

Your Target Market.

Before we go ahead let’s have a brief understanding of the target market.

Our viewer’s, listeners or readers who follow us on our blogs to learn what you are teaching is our target market.

Mind it, they are the most important people for your blog, as they are your potential customers, so always treat them well and keep them pampered.

Exercise to find your target market:

  1. Grab your diary and list out the names you have in your network, who are in your personal touch of at-least 10 people (ideally 20 or more) whom you would love to have as your reader or listener or viewer and as your customer.
  1. Now make a second list of the attributes/characteristics/features of a person who would ideally benefit from your teachings about the topic you have chosen and brainstorm yourself with the questions that why they would benefit the most? List the problems that your teachings will solve for them? What is the inspiration for your readers to be interested in your topic? List out the motivational factors to learn more about your topic?
  1. Now filter out the names of people you listed in your first list who have the attributes /characteristics/ features of a person who would ideally benefit from your teachings about the topic you have chosen. If you got even one name, that’s your ideal customer and picture of your target market.

Don’t worry if you haven’t found any name among your personal contacts. Go ahead and make a list of people in your Facebook friend list or LinkedIn connection and repeat the same method with all of them. I am sure you’ll get a lot of names that you can even imagine.

Analyse the third ingredient:

Now once you have listed down all the things mentioned above. Make a list of personal contact information of those people.

They may be in any form. Contact number/Email-ID/Skype-ID. Anything through which you can get in touch with them directly.

Now use the scripts below to text/email them directly. Mind it, it should be strictly personal. A one-to-one text or mail. Use the script, according to the type of niche you chose.
