Now that you have installed WordPress on your chosen WordPress hosting service provider, here is what you should do next with your WordPress website “Optimization”. Let’s optimize your website before we go any further, as instructed below.

Note:

These are general settings that you should configure after setting up WordPress for the first time. You can skip certain, depending upon your requirements.

This is to just to remind and to navigate properly:

  1. Finalize and Register Your Web Domain Name;
  2. Choose and buy a web hosting plan;
  3. Optimize cPanel & Install WordPress;
  4. (( You are here ));
  5. Change your theme;
  6. Start Writing your first Blog.

Log in to WordPress dashboard, go to “yourdomain.com/wp-admin”, log-in with your account login id and password with which you installed your WordPress. You’ll see your dashboard screen like this:

Delete Default Post and Page

Go to Posts > All Posts and delete the “Hello world” post.
Then, go to Pages > All Pages and delete “Sample Page”.
Finally, go on “Comments” and delete “Sample Comment”.

Set Up WordPress Permalink Structure

Default permalink comes as – http://yourdomain.com/p=123, it’s short but non friendly to search engines, so at later stage with this permalink, your post will not be searched on search engines, even if it contain quality refined content.

So go to Settings > Permalink and select “Post name” and don’t forget to save it.

Go to Settings> General:

  • tick “Anyone can register” in front of Membership,
  • site language to your preferred language and,
  • Your Time Zone to your local Time Zone.

Setting up your preferred language and time zone is very important, as that is language in what Google Search will look up your articles and as per your local time zone, your post’s will go live.

Settings > Writing

When you install WordPress for the first time, it already has an “Uncategorized” category which you can change as per your requirement. Here’s how you can do it:

Go to Posts > Categories on the left side panel, add a new category and delete the old “Uncategorized” category, if you want to.

WordPress Ping List

Blog has the ability to ping search engine bots. By doing so, your WordPress blog notifies search engines about your newly published blog posts, so it’s better to update your ping list, which you can get from here.

Once you’ll click on “Update Services”, you’ll see a list, which will look something like in the image below:

Copy & Paste all the URLs in the box below and “Save Changes”.

It’s on your sole discretion to choose the number of posts you want to show on your blog post, but as per industry practice, it’s better to keep it 10 and if you want more activity on your website, then it’s better to choose summary to be shown on feed.

This is to improve WordPress image handling, as it has a bad habit of creating very different sizes of every image you upload on your blog, leading increase in its size and henceforth slow loading time and as per statistics, 50% readers change their pages, if a page takes more than 3 seconds to load.
